supermarket super heroes

  • I was a brand new mommy and I was going to the grocery store to get away for a minute. The first few months of Eden's life was kicking my butt, to say the least.  My recovery was long and I'm pretty sure I was postpartum or baby blues-ish or whatever, I was not myself. It was all just over whelming me so much on this particular day. When I went to the store I was trying to pick out a cantaloupe. The woman next to me was very pregnant and seemed to be nice so I asked her how to pick a cantaloupe. Come to find out she was deaf.  We talked for a minute (not sure how, but we did). This was her second child. I mean wow, right? Here I am feeling overwhelmed with my one and she was about to have two with a serious handicap. This woman was bright,  her countenance just was shining. She was such a happy person. I walked way and thought of how she couldn't hear her baby cry in the night. There were so many normal things that I could do that she could not.  I just left feeling so inspired by her life. Uh-mazing. I felt like I was on a cloud for the next few days just from being in such a good person's presence and feeling the effects of how it put my life into perspective.

  • There is this man that works at Target and he never ceases to smile.  I went to Target A LOT when I lived within a mile of the store and I always saw this grey haired man there who was the most friendly person.  He was just beaming with a genuine smile and love for people.  I had the chance to go by that same store recently and he was at the check out stand. He's the type of person that just makes you want to smile.  He said "Why is your day going so well?" I said,"Well , I just got out of teaching a really great dance class. Why is your day going so well?"  He said, "I actually work at a high school and it was a pretty emotional tough day but it's been going better since I got to work here."....So let me get this straight super happy not so young man who is working at Target: this is your SECOND job for the day??? and coming to it makes you happy? and you probably support your family like a champ with the same positivity and happiness...wow.  I told him I remembered him from when I used to live near and I appreciated how kind he is to everyone.

  • This one is simple: One mommy: two kids on her hip one kid in the cart.... really crappy weather....frigid wind blowing and snow starting to come down....she was patient with her wiggly kiddos... incredible!

I love these silent heroes, the people that live their lives joyfully with humility and grace.

If only I could be such an individual.

Ah... the purpose of my life.

I love this post Soph, and am feeling so uplifted by what you wrote. You are right--there are ordinary heroes all around us. I am sure a lot of people feel that way about you too. How wonderful that you are able to notice them :)

Sophie you definitely are one of those people in my eyes, every time I was around you your countenance shone so bright! I also remember the grey haired man at Target and when we go there I still watch for him, he is always so nice and helpful and really does that make that store so much more enjoyable! Thanks for the great reminder, it is always nice to have a reminder to be happy no matter what the circumstances!
