In June Brent had his tonsils removed. The recovery was hard and longer than we expected. He had to be on pain killers for the first week. Between his constant sleeping and the drugs we got some pretty good stuff and I have forgotten how badly I am dying to share this until now!
I went into his room right after the procedure and I pointed to his glowing red finger from the hospital machine he was hooked up to.
S: Honey you have a red finger.
B: I'm like Rudolph the red fingered cowboy.
~
We watched Secretariat and Brent fell asleep right after. I was in the kitchen making some food when I heard
B: Did we get the money to pay off the house??
S: Ummmm yeah, we did.
B: Did they have to sell the horse?
S: Silence....I couldn't answer because I was going to laugh.
~Pause~
B: (A bit louder now) Did they have to sell the horse?
~
B: I think it's important to go to Disneyland...I know it's expensive but it's worth it.
(He normally says he wants to wait until Eden is older.)
~
He is totally passed out with eyes closed...
B: Ummhmmm Uh huh, ummm uh huh...Do we have a white board?
(I think he was having a conversation in his dream and his throat hurt so he wanted to write instead.)
~
B: I feel handicapped....I need to sit up.
I hand him a drink of water.
He holds it and looks around with eyes mostly shut.
B:Now what?
~
After the surgery the doctors told us his voice could go a bit higher for a while.
One day he sat up and realized that he sounded like someone familiar...
he sounded just like Kasey from the Bachelorette. The following hour we had a quote session and I received many promises that Brent would "Guard and protect my heart"
~
This one was kind of profound:
B: It's important to listen sometimes, you know?
B: Sometimes we forget.
~
In his sleep:
B: I need to do well on the test...
Everyone needs to do well.
~
At his parents house his sister offered to make Brent a smoothie to which he replied...
B: Don't forget to use rubber gloves, those are really important.
~
B: The toilet paper is out. I just wanted to tell you cause toilet paper is made from trees and if we don't use it someone else will.
~
B: Lets have a meeting. (He sits up)
B: We need to talk...
right here...(pats the couch)
B: (In a very serious tone but with eyes mostly closed) How's your performance?... What do you think you could impr..... ahhh, I gotta go pee.
Gets up and goes to the bathroom.
Needless to say I was thoroughly entertained by all of his sleep talking pain medicated antics. I just felt bad that the recovery took so long.

Soph, this is one of th best things I've ever read. I laughed at every single one of these. And here's the bad thing about that... I'm reading this while sitting in on my first day of student teaching. (I'm not a terrible student teacher, I've just heard this same thing 3 times today). So, yeah, stifling my laughing has proven to be difficult. But I couldn't stop reading... so great. Thanks Soph.
